PRIVACY ROUTING / DECISION MAP

Choose Your Privacy Email Route by Exposure Duration

Not every signup calls for a disposable email, and not every site needs your real address. Start by assessing the relationship length and the cost of losing access.

DURATION × RECOVERY × SENSITIVITY

Ask Four Questions Before Choosing a Tool

  1. Will you need to receive mail after 24 hours? If you need password resets, order updates, or notifications, rule out a disposable address.
  2. What would losing access cost you? A one-time download is not the same as a paid account.
  3. Will you receive attachments? Disposable email does not retain attachments, so use a long-term route for contracts and receipts.
  4. Can you cut it off on its own if exposed? If ongoing marketing is possible, a dedicated alias is easier to control.

Clear Boundaries Between the Three Routes

ROUTE T / TEMP

Disposable Email

No registration required. Default lifetime: 3 hours, with a 24-hour maximum. Ideal for one-time verification or low-value downloads; attachments are not retained.

ROUTE A / ALIAS

Forwarding Alias

Long-term forwarding that you can pause and trace to its source. Ideal for shopping, software, communities, and subscriptions, with records available for the past 30 days.

ROUTE R / REAL

Real Email

Use it for banks, government services, primary accounts, and critical work identities, together with strong authentication and recovery codes.

Privacy Routing Is Not a One-Time Decision

A trial may become a paid relationship, and a newsletter may turn into noise. Review regularly whether temporary accounts need to be migrated, aliases still serve a purpose, and unnecessary sites still hold your real email.

  • Switch to a long-term, controllable address before paying.
  • Use one alias per service.
  • Before pausing an alias, confirm that no important recovery process depends on it.
  • Deleting an account does not mean its address has been removed from backups.

Use a temporary address for short tasks; switch long-term relationships to permanent forwarding.
